Sewing with Stretch Fabrics
Updated: Apr 18, 2023
Have you ever wondered, can I make that top with a knit fabric instead of woven? Well today I am going to answer that question for you!
For today’s Tuesday Tip, we are talking about working with stretch fabrics!
You can make a woven garment, like the Bondi Top, with knit fabrics. However, you can't make a knit garment out of woven fabrics because of what is called "negative ease". This means that the extra room that is built into woven garments that allow you to move around is not the same in knit garments due to the knit already having the ease built in.
If you do decided to make a woven garment with knit fabrics, this means you can usually size down for a closer fit.
Make sure you are using a ball point needle and walking foot if using your domestic sewing machine.
Also, use a lightening bolt stitch when stitching a knit fabric to allow the seam to stretch as you are sewing.
I also wanted to share our recent LIVE on instagram where I cover more of my tips for working with knit fabrics.
Here are the Items we discussed in the video:
Here is the link to another video: Mt top tips for working with stretch fabrics. Similar to our live but I wanted to include it here.
Finally, I have also included the video: T-shirt Pattern Hack. This also has a lot of great tips on working with stretch fabrics.
Hope you enjoyed learning about working with knit fabrics. Please let me know if you have any questions. :) Hope to see you soon at another live event!
